Anti-Harassment Policy

Applies to: students, staff and guests

Dev Academy is committed to a professional, open, productive and respectful exchange of ideas and information, growth mindset and learning is at the heart of what we do. These aims require a community and environment that fosters inclusion, provides mutual respect, and embraces diversity.

All students, staff and co-workers at Dev Academy are required to agree to the following code of conduct. Harassment in any form will not be tolerated. This includes, but is not limited to, speech or behaviour (whether in person, in presentations or in online discussions) that intimidates, prevents or interferes with a person’s participation or opportunity for participation in Dev Academy’s values and mission.

Microaggressions

Dev Academy defines harassment to also include microaggressions, which are defined as brief and commonplace daily verbal, behavioural and environmental communications, whether intentional or unintentional, that transmit hostile, derogatory or negative messages to a target person because they belong to a stigmatised group. Dev Academy will provide resources and training to students on how to identify microaggressions by themselves or by others, and appropriate tools to address them.

We aim for Dev Academy to be an organisation where harassment in any form does not happen, including but not limited to: harassment based on race, gender, religion, age, colour, national or ethnic origin, ancestry, disability, marital status, sexual orientation or gender identity.

Harassment includes but is not limited to: verbal comments that reinforce social structures of domination; sexual images in public spaces; deliberate intimidation, stalking or following; harassing photography or recording; sustained disruption of talks, lectures, Human Skills sessions or other events; microaggressions; inappropriate physical contact; unwelcome sexual attention; and advocating for or encouraging any of the above behaviour. Jokes of a sexual or derogatory nature.

Procedures

Dev Academy staff will take seriously all reports of breaches of this code of conduct, and treat all parties with respect and due process without presupposition of guilt. Complaints will be handled with sensitivity, discretion and confidentiality.

Students, space users or event participants violating any of these rules may be sanctioned or expelled from Dev Academy, at the discretion of the staff of Dev Academy. Anyone at Dev Academy who experiences or witnesses harassment should contact one of the Dev Academy staff.
